Bring the big screen to your next big event with Carl's Projection Screen Materials — whether you're a seasoned DIY projection screen builder or a professional installer we've got you covered.
Materials:Let's break it down. We have several projection screen materials (aka projector screen fabric, movie screen material, projection screen cloth) to suit your technical and installation needs.
Feel free to check out our guide here to help you select the best material for your environment's lighting (from pitch black all the way up to moderate ambient light), or see our quick summary below of the typical uses for different material types.
- FlexiWhite: An excellent material for all-around use, it's flexible and easy to fold for storage in-between uses (and readily stretches back out again to get rid of fold lines and wrinkles), making it a very versatile projection screen material! Easy to install over wood frames, it's a popular choice as a hanging projector screen. Its PVC construction makes it popular with the outdoor crowd as well!
- Ultra-White: Similar to ProWhite but a better picture in just about every way. Very smooth, very matte and can make most projectors display a picture with unparalleled clarity and uniformity.
- Blackout Cloth: The material that started it all! Blackout cloth is still a popular choice for budget screen builders. It's very smooth, flexible, covers a large surface area, and it's inexpensive, making for a perfect mini drive-in screen!
- ProWhite: Typically used in roll-down applications, it hangs flatter than other materials all by itself but can't be folded for storage as it has a stiffer structure that will kink when bent too sharply. Recommended for use for limited installation options where stretching might not be possible.
- FlexiGray: Just like FlexiWhite, but tinted slightly gray, making it perfect for minor issues with ambient light.
- ALR: Our Ambient Light Rejecting (ALR) screen material is really special. It's colored a dark gray for maximum contrast from your projector, while its shiny surface helps keep colors bright. It's very popular in multipurpose rooms where light is difficult to control. Avoid folding because while a flexible material, it isn't quite as resilient as the other flexible materials. Also, use caution when pairing with a short throw projector or with edge-blending because of the possibility of inconsistent image brightness.
- Ultra-Gray: With the same features as UltraWhite, our light-gray Ultra option is a premium version of the Pro series with a smoother screen texture for a higher quality image.
- Ultra-ALR: Like our UltraWhite, this is a stiffer version of our ALR material but even smoother for an even clearer image from a variety of angles.
- ProGray: The gray version of ProWhite, it's also useful when minor ambient light is expected and is recommended for screens with limited installation options because the material is stiffer than others.
- White Rear Film: Very similar to our gray rear film, our white rear film is more opaque, which helps make the images more uniform when paired with brighter projectors. Slightly dimmer than gray rear film but more even in its light distribution, making it a great choice in dark environments.
- Gray Rear Film: Translucent and slightly gray, it will give you the brightest image available in a rear projection material, which is great for environments with some ambient light. In dark environments, however, care must be taken to avoid hotspots. Avoid projectors that are too bright or that project in direct line-of-sight to the viewer.
- Nano FlexiWhite/FlexiGray: Our Nano material is just like our Flexi material but with very small holes, resulting in a 7% open surface to let sound through. This perforated projection screen is ideal for an audience sitting closer to the screen.
- SheerWeave: A popular DIY choice for acoustic transparency for years, at 5% open, it's an alternative to perforations, using an open weave for acoustic transparency instead. Mount at an angle to avoid issues with moiré.
- SilverScreen: Specifically designed for passive 3D applications, the high gain of this flexible screen helps maintain the polarity of a projected image.
- ProSilver: The Pro version (stiff material) of SilverScreen ideal for when a roll-down or pull-down projector screen or other alternative installation options are required.
We recommend building a screen to match your projector's aspect ratio. See this article for more information.
Finishing:All our materials are available raw, making them ideal DIY projector screen fabric.
Simply tell us the size you require, and we'll cut it and send it to you so you can make your own projector screen! Stretch and staple to a frame, tack it up, or try something else – the possibilities are practically endless.
On materials that are foldable, we also offer to finish the edges of your screen to make it a little easier to install. Our standard method of finishing is to wrap the edges all the way around with black vinyl to create a 2.5-inch border, then install black grommets all the way around. This lets you easily grab the screen with a bungee, wire, hook, or anything else to make hanging a very large projector screen a breeze!
Seams:Many of our materials are available in widths that allow screens up to 126-inch tall with no seams. But sometimes, 10' tall just isn't tall enough. For those occasions, we can weld (or sew, depending on the type) materials together to easily go up to 20' tall. Our welded seams are practically invisible.
Packaging:We generally recommend ordering your material rolled when possible to make installation easier. However, on larger screens or those with finished borders, this isn't always practical. You can opt to have foldable materials sent in a box to save on packaging and freight to keep shipping affordable on your DIY projector screen material.
